Enphase inverter via Modbus TCP connection
This guide describes step by step how to connect an Enphase system to the Currentt Navigator via Modbus TCP over the local network. The connection runs via the Enphase Envoy gateway (Envoy-S Metered or IQ Gateway Metered).
See also: For systems without Modbus TCP support, refer to the External meter (alternative method) guide.
✅ Compatible Envoy gateways
Modbus TCP is only supported by Envoy gateways with built-in metering (Metered models).
| Model | Supported | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Envoy-S Standard | No | Use the external meter method |
| Envoy-S Metered | Yes | Activation by Enphase Support required |
| IQ Gateway (standard) | No | Use the external meter method |
| IQ Gateway Metered | Yes | Activation by Enphase Support required |
| IQ Gateway Commercial | Yes | Activation by Enphase Support required |
🧰 Requirements
- Currentt Navigator (connected to the local network)
- Enphase Envoy-S Metered or IQ Gateway Metered
- Ethernet cable (CAT5 or CAT6) — if the Envoy is not yet wired to the network
- Network access (both devices on the same LAN or routable network)
- Serial number and site ID of the Envoy gateway (found on the device label)
1️⃣ Step 1: Have Modbus TCP activated by Enphase Support
Modbus TCP is disabled by default on all Envoy gateways and cannot be enabled by yourself. Enphase must activate this remotely.

What to mention to Enphase Support
Provide the following information:
- Serial number of the Envoy gateway
- Site ID (found in the Enphase Enlighten app or on the label)
- Request: Activation of Modbus TCP/IP on the gateway
- Reason: integration with an external energy management system (Currentt Navigator)
Activation can take up to 10 business days. Plan this well in advance.
After activation, you can verify whether Modbus TCP is active by connecting with a Modbus client (e.g. from the Currentt Navigator) on port 502 of the Envoy.
2️⃣ Step 2: Connect the Envoy gateway to the network
Ensure the Envoy gateway is connected to the local network:
- Most Envoy gateways are already connected to the home network via WiFi
- For a more stable connection, the Envoy can also be connected via an Ethernet cable (if the model has an Ethernet port)
- Verify that the Envoy gateway and the Currentt Navigator are on the same network
3️⃣ Step 3: Determine the IP address
To communicate via Modbus TCP, you need the IP address of the Envoy gateway.
Finding the IP address
The IP address can be found in several ways:
- Via the Enphase Enlighten app: The IP address is displayed in the system details
- Via your router: Check the DHCP client list of your router and look for the device named "Envoy" or the serial number
- Via a network scan: Use a network scan app to find devices on port 502
4️⃣ Step 4: Configuration in the Currentt Navigator
After Modbus TCP has been activated by Enphase, the device must be added in the Currentt Navigator. This can be done in two ways:
🪄 Via the setup wizard (recommended)
- Click the settings icon (top right of the screen)
- Choose Setup wizard
- Follow the on-screen steps
The setup wizard guides you step by step through the complete configuration process.
⚙️ Manual configuration
- Click the settings icon (top right of the screen)
- Go to Components
- Click the + button in the Inverters section
- Select Enphase
- Indicate which phase the inverter is connected to (L1, L2 or L3)
- Under Communication, select Modbus and click Network (TCP)
- Set the connection parameters:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| IP address | (IP address of the Envoy gateway) |
| Port | 502 |
| Modbus address (Device ID) | 1 |
⚠️ Limitations and considerations
Read-only
The Currentt Navigator can only read production data from the Enphase system via Modbus TCP. It is not possible to control the micro-inverters or limit power output via this connection.
Activation by Enphase required
Modbus TCP cannot be enabled by yourself. This must always be done remotely by Enphase Support. Plan the activation well in advance.
Metered models only
Only Envoy gateways with built-in metering (Metered) support Modbus TCP. Do you have a standard (non-Metered) Envoy? Use the external meter method instead.
🛟 Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No connection | Modbus TCP not activated | Contact Enphase Support for activation |
| No connection | Wrong IP address | Check the IP address via your router or Enlighten app |
| No connection | Wrong port | Check that port 502 is being used |
| No connection | Not on the same network | Check that Envoy and Navigator are on the same LAN |
| No data | Wrong Device ID | Check that the Device ID matches (default: 1) |
| Activation takes long | Enphase processing time | Activation can take up to 10 business days |
