SolaX inverter via Modbus TCP connection

This guide describes step by step how to connect a SolaX inverter to the Currentt Navigator via Modbus TCP over the local network, using a SolaX Pocket dongle.

⚙️ How it works

SolaX inverters do not support Modbus TCP directly. Modbus TCP requires a SolaX Pocket dongle. This is a small device that plugs into the DONGLE port on the underside of the inverter and connects to the local network via WiFi or a LAN cable.

The dongle acts as an intermediary: it translates Modbus TCP (from the network) into the internal communication with the inverter. The Currentt Navigator reads and controls the inverter via Modbus TCP.

Not every dongle supports Modbus TCP

Modbus TCP only works with the following dongles:

  • Pocket WiFi V3.0-P
  • Pocket WiFi+LAN
  • Pocket WiFi+4GM

The older Pocket LAN and Pocket WiFi 2.0 do not offer Modbus TCP. If you have one of these dongles, use Modbus RTU or replace the dongle.

Updating the firmware

Modbus TCP requires recent dongle firmware. If the connection does not work, check whether the dongle is running the latest firmware. This can be done via the SolaX Cloud app or through your installer.

🧰 Requirements

  • Currentt Navigator (connected to the local network)
  • SolaX Pocket WiFi V3.0-P, Pocket WiFi+LAN or Pocket WiFi+4GM
  • Laptop or phone to open the web interface of the dongle
  • WiFi network or a LAN cable (RJ-45) to connect the dongle to the router

🪛 Installation instructions

Step 1: Fit the dongle

  1. Plug the Pocket dongle into the DONGLE port on the underside of the inverter
  2. Tighten the locking ring until the dongle is firmly seated
  3. Make sure the inverter is switched on and the dongle starts up

Step 2: Connect the dongle to the network

Connect the dongle to the same network as the Currentt Navigator. This can be done via LAN (wired, Pocket WiFi+LAN only) or via WiFi.

  1. Connect your laptop or phone to the access point of the dongle. The network is called Wifi_Sxxxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxxx is the registration number of the dongle
  2. Open a browser and navigate to http://5.8.8.8
  3. Log in with username admin and password admin
    • If this does not work, use the registration number of the dongle as the password
  4. Enter the details of your home network (network name and password) and save
  5. The dongle restarts and connects to your local network
Wired connection recommended

A wired LAN connection is more stable than WiFi and prevents communication problems caused by a weak or fluctuating signal. The Pocket WiFi+LAN switches automatically between LAN and WiFi.

Step 3: Determine the IP address

To link the inverter to the Currentt Navigator you need the IP address of the dongle.

  1. Determine the IP address the dongle has received on your network
    • Via your router: check the DHCP client list
    • Via the web interface: the IP address is visible in the network settings of the dongle
  2. Note the IP address; you will need it in the next step
Static IP address recommended

With DHCP, the IP address of the dongle can change after a router restart, causing the connection with the Currentt Navigator to drop. Set a static IP address via the web interface of the dongle, or reserve the IP address in your router (DHCP reservation).

Step 4: Configuration in the Currentt Navigator

After configuring the dongle, the inverter must be added in the Currentt Navigator.

  1. Click the settings icon (top right of the screen)
  2. Choose Installation wizard
  3. Follow the steps on the screen

Manual configuration

  1. Click the settings icon (top right of the screen)
  2. Go to Components
  3. Click the + button in the Inverters section
  4. Select SolaX
  5. Under Communication, enter the connection details:
ParameterValue
Physical connectionNetwork (TCP)
Modbus address1 (default)
IP address(IP address of the dongle)
TCP port502 (default)
  1. Click Save
Modbus address with TCP

The Modbus address is also required with Modbus TCP: the dongle passes the request on to the inverter using that address. By default this is 1.

Same network required

The Currentt Navigator and the dongle must be on the same network (and the same VLAN). If they are in different network segments, the Navigator cannot reach the inverter.

SolaX Cloud keeps working

Unlike with some other brands, monitoring via SolaX Cloud continues to work when you use Modbus TCP. The dongle can offer local Modbus TCP and communicate with the cloud at the same time.
